Lille High Field NMR platform comprises  800 MHz and 900 MHz NMR spectrometers equipped for both liquid- and solid-state NMR. They are locally managed by  the Center for Catalysis and Solid State Chemistry (Unité de Catalyse et de Chimie du Solide, UCCS, UMR- 8181 CNRS/Univ. Lille/ENSC-Lille/EC-Lille/Univ. Artois) and the Center for Structural and Functional Glycobiology (Unité de Glycobiologie Structurale et Fonctionnelle, UGSF, UMR-8576 CNRS/Univ. Lille). UCCS and UGSF are respectively involved in research clusters FR 2638 (Institut Michel-Eugène Chevreul) and FR 3688 (FRABio, Biochimie Structurale et Fonctionnelle des Assemblages Biomoléculaires) that bring together most of the analytical platforms for Chemistry and Biology at the University of Lille.

Description of the high-field NMR platform

 Spectrometers :
+ 800SB [Solid(75%)/Liquid+HRMAS(25%)]
+ 900SB [Liquid with cryoprobe (75%)/solid+liquid+HRMAS (25%)]

900MHz spectrometer is used with the cryoprobe 75 % of the time with two sessions per year of 6-8 weeks long dedicated to "warm probes" (solid state/broadband liquid state NMR).
On 800 MHz spectrometer, liquid/solid state probes are exchanged on demand.

SampleJet for automatic sample changer (controled temperature loader tray : 6°C, 16°C, room temperature)
BCU-2 for temperature regulation in solid/liquid

CryoProbe TCI 5mm (1H*/13C*/15N/2H*), z-gradient, T°: -40° to 80°C (*:cold  channels)
HRMAS 4mm (1H/13C/15N/2H) z-gradient, T°: 2° to 50°C
BBO 5mm (109Ag-31P/1H/2H), z-gradient, Tº : -150° to 180°C
TXI 5mm (1H/13C/15N/2H), z-gradients, T°: -150° to 150°C

800 MHz Bruker Avance NEO 4 channels

A frequency splitter (REDORBOX manufactured by NMR-Service company) can be used with the 3.2mm HX probe in order to carry out double-resonance NMR experiments between isotopes with close Larmor frequencies near 200 MHz, such as 13C,27Al,23Na and 51V.

photoFeasible NMR experiments:

Solid-state NMR : high-resolution NMR experiments for quadrupolar nuclei (MQ-MAS, ST-MAS), through-space and through-bond hetero- and homo-nuclear correlations between spin-1/2 isotopes and quadrupolar nuclei (notably homonuclear correlation between half-integer spin quadrupolar nuclei, HMQC or INEPT correlation between spin-1/2 isotopes and quadrupolar nuclei, including those with close Larmor frequencies, such as 13C-27Al …), high-resolution 1H NMR experiments...

Research activities:

RM2I-UCCS :

The research group about NMR and inorganic materials (RM2I) at UCCS focuses on the development of solid-state NMR methods, notably at high magnetic fields and for quadrupolar nuclei. In particular, this group has developed hetero-nuclear correlation methods involving quadrupolar nuclei and has applied these techniques for the characterization of oxide glasses and heterogeneous catalysts (group web page).

UGSF :

  • The research group of Isabelle Landrieu (formerly Guy Lippens) principaly focuses on the NMR of intrinsically disordered proteins (group website)
  • The research group of Yann Guerardel focuses on glycoconjugates (group webpage)
  • UGSF also includes a specific platform, PAGés, for the analysis of glycoconjugates.

Other NMR instruments in Lille :

Besides 800 and 900 MHz NMR spectrometers, the Lille NMR cluster brings together NMR research groups from UCCS, UGSF, LARMN and LASIR as well as the lower field NMR spectrometers located near Lille. These spectrometers belong to the NMR facilities of the Departments of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Lille as well as to the NMR facility of the Pasteur Institute of Lille.

Solid-state NMR spectrometers of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Lille:

  • Two 400 MHz WB NMR Avance I and II spectrometers with 3 channels:

    • the probes can be used on both spectrometers:

      • HXY (2.5mm, 3.2mm, 4mm);

      • HX 4mm (standard CPMAS, low gamma, WVT, MQMAS);

      • HX 7mm low gamma;

      • HX 5mm statique.
    • REDOR Box with a nominal frequency of 100 MHz (13C-23Na).

  • 100 MHz WB Avance I spectrometer with 2 channels:

    • HX 4mm standard CPMAS probe;

    • HX 7mm standard CPMAS probe.

  • 300MHz SB Avance III:

    • BBO 5mm (1H-19F/2H/109Ag-31P) probe, z-gradient, T°: -80° to 120°C;

Liquid-state NMR spectrometers of the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Lille:

  • 500 MHz SB Avance NEO spectrometer:

    • TXI 5mm (1H/13C/15N/2H) probe, z-gradient;

    • QNP 5mm (1H-19F/13C/31P/2H) probe, z-gradient;

    • BBO 5mm (BB/1H/2H) probe, z-gradient;

    • HRMAS 4mm (1H/13C/2H) probe, z-gradient;

    • NMR measurements under light irradiation via an optical fiber [mercury-vapor lamp with filters, Nd:YAG laser with wavelengths 532, 355 et 266 nm].
